A Thorough Analysis Of The Samurai Shodown Reveal Trailer

Published:

While we gave our biggest takeaways from the Samurai shodown Trailer in a previous article, i couldn’t help but share this amazingly thorough analysis of the teaser by a talented fan, Adam, who gave me the okay to publish his analysis. You can read more of Adam’s tweet by following his twitter account at: @experimilk

Hey everyone! My name is Adam, and I have spent way too much time watching the new samsho trailer. I’m a big fan, and I broke it down for people who are interested in what the story and mechanics of the new game might be. Tweets inbound!

The year is 1787, placing the timeline of the game between samshoV (samsho0 in jpn) and the original. Samurai Shodown chronology is all over the place, and characters do die along the way, but between 0 and 1 is prime territory for most of the 2D cast to make canon appearances.

You can see Gaoh, the boss of SamshoV in the painting, the one that has the big spear. In that story, Gaoh is motivated to rebel against the current shogunate in order to change the dismal conditions people live in. Yoshitora defeats him and becomes shogun (think master asia-y)

Many samsho characters have irl correlations in Japanese history. Yoshitora = Tokugawa Ienari, the 11th shogun. This name, Matsudaira Sadanobu, is connected to Ienari, being one of his regents and working on the Kansei Reforms, which started opening up the country a -bit-.

Alright, enough story! The FIRST THING YOU SEE is Haohmaru’s heavy slash. Samurai Shodown is a game where normals do HUGE damage and have a ton of hitstop, and immediately you see that this game will be no different.

Samurai Shodown is also a violent game, where winning the match might mean dismembering your opponent. This screen might be something like that, or it might reference Issen, a mechanic in previous games that let you wager your super meter for the rest of the match on one hit.

Next, we see a cinematic super, or Weapon Flipping Technique (WFT). Note the color change in the background to dark blue. The fact that it changes is cinematic and neat, but the actual color change might be relevant, as I’ll talk about a little later.

Haoh is already bloodied, clothes soaked in red as he’s about to take the super from Jubei. It seems you will get more bloodstained as the match progress. Also: note the sepia tone! not blue! It could be that it’s just different colors on different stages.

Here we see another super cinematic, or bits of one. I feel like it might be a remix of her KOFXIV climax super. Another shot to show you the game isn’t playing around. You generally want to avoid getting stabbed or cut in real life, and the gameplay of samsho reflects that.

A pic that shows a few characters not in game yet! Chars not in the trailer: tamtam genjuro charlotte (the high boots are the giveaway) kyoshiro (yes! we in there) hanzo ukyo I feel like those that say this is the painting in charl stage are right on the money.

Earthquake doing his classic samsho2 WFT. Blue background in the bamboo thicket, where it was sepia when Jubei was doing his WFT. This leads me to believe there are two WFT per chara, either hierarchical and used under different conditions or selected pre match. slash/bust?

Weapon clashes are back! In previous titles, clashing with the same strength button might send you into this sequence where you had to mash all your buttons. The loser was disarmed, a classic aspect of samsho that is nowhere to be seen in the trailer. I hope it’s included!

This little clash sequence also shows Haohmaru with a flushed face. As you fought, you would become redder as you got angrier and your rage gauge filled, and this could be a more subtle version of that. It could also be some sort of special drunk Haoh state? He does carry sake~~~

Also, notice that the background turns sepia BEFORE the WFT animation starts, showing that the super required some sort of hit or confirm beforehand, maybe giving more credence to it being a counter WFT, or a mechanic in which you can parry and then do your WFT if you want.

I’ve seen people say that the game looks like sf4, and [[SPECULATION INBOUND]] I feel like that’s because Daigo Ikeno, legendary capcom artist, character designer and art director for sf4 is actually the art director for this game. This Haoh has a very Daigo Ikeno-y face.

Definitely a great and thorough look at the amazing Samurai Shodown reveal trailer. What do you think?

Nabil, AKA Strugler, is an old time fan of the fighting games genre. Born in the early 80's Strugler got to experience the rise (and fall) of the Arcade scene, and learned the hard way to never mash buttons in order to win the last third round of a Street Fighter II match.
