These Are The Biggest Reveals from The Samurai Shodown Reveal Trailer

Published:

The internet is still shaking from SNK’s awesome Reveal Trailer of the new Samurai Shodown. The video gave us a good look at what to expect from the upcoming game and also featured a lot of quick hints and glimpses that ight have gone unnoticed. Below is all the biggest reveals we learn from the Samurai Shodown trailer:

New Graphics Engine:

SNK’s transition to the 3D, from 2D sprites, was not a smooth one. While KOFXIV is successfuly great title, the game’s graphics were critisized since the game’s reveal. SNK would later polish the engine a bit with the famous Patch 1.10. The same engine was also used in, the recently released, SNK Heroines, and as i pointed in my review of the game the graphics looked quite outdated. This luckily is all changing as SNK is now using the, true and tested, Unreal Engine for its Samurai Shodown Revival. The game also seems to have a paint brush effect, that is cearly apparnt in the stages, and some characters, giving the illusion of looking at an old Japanese painting. The results, from what we can see so far, are stunning.

The game is a Reboot Of The Franchise:

This is what no one expected! Samurai Shodown is not a new sequel to the famed series but a complete reboot and retelling. The trailer reveals that the story takes place in 1787, which is one year before the first game released in 1993, and also around the same time that Samurai Shodown V (Known as Samurai Spirits Zero in Japan) takes place. The beginning of the trailer uses an old japanese painting which illustrates some sort of war with Gaoh (Samurai shodown’s V boss) fighting in it. This is clearly a nod to a similar event that took place during the Samurai Shodown V era.  If the title of the game, simply called Samurai Shodown, and the setting are not enough to show that this is a reboot, the game will also bring back many, if not all, the stages and characters of the first game(s).

Samurai shodown Story

Most Of the Original Cast are Back:

The samurai shodown reveal trailer showed us few charactres in action. These include Haohmaru, Nakoruru, Jubei, Eathquake and Galford. Eagle eyed fans will be also able to spot an image showing most of the original game’s roster. These include: Charlotte, Tam Tam, Hanzo, Kyoshiro, as well as Genjuro from Samurai Shodown 2. Check out a screengrab fo the image below:

Remade Stages from the first Game Are In:

Much like the setting and Characters, the stages from the first Samurai Shodown game are back with a modern look. The Reveal trailer shows us beautiful renditions of Haohmaru’s shore stage, Nakoruru’s Kamui Kotan village, Jubei’s Bamboo forrest and more.

Characters can get bruised:

This is a new one for the series and SNK games in General. But it seems like characters will feel and show the effect of the fight on their skin. Looking closely at the trailer you can see Howomaru’s face showing a bloody bruise unseen in other parts of the trailer. This also brings up the question whether the character’s clothes will also be affected.

The Game Brings Back The gore:

While Samurai Shodown was never about the gore, the game did have some cool finishers that activate when you hit your opnnent with hard slash at the end of the game. This resulted in your enemy getting split in half or drained of his/her blood. The series even introduced full blown Fatalities in Samurai shodown V. While we don’t know how these finishers will be executed, it sure seems that the game has brought the gore back. The reveal trailer shows blood splashing everywhere, and even gave us what looks like a finisher (or the end of a super) for Nakoruru which ends by her stabbing her oponent while he is down, resulting in the kamui kotan pristress having a messy outfit.

Characters have multiple Super Moves:

Unlike most SNK fighters,  the original Samurai shodown was one of the few games that did not have super moves when it came out. The series will adopt the concept with Samurai Shodown II, but for some reason always limited the number of super moves to one per character, throughout its franchise’s history. This is clearly changing with the reboot, as the Samurai shodown Reveal trailer clearly shows multiple super moves being executed by the same character. A welcome change to say the least.
