Why We Think the New SNK Game Is A Samurai Shodown Revival

Speculations about SNK’s upcoming Mystery Game grew out of control in matter of minutes after the announcement. Fans from all over the world started guessing which SNK game will be getting a new sequel: Is it KOFXV? A New SamuRai Shodown? A Sequel to Garou: Mark Of The Wolves? Maybe it is Last Blade 3? Or could it be a new Metal Slug? Others even dared to wish for a new Psycho soldier game (you know that old NES platformer with Athen and Kensou).

While we do not for sure know which game will be announced this coming Monday, we have some strong reasons and hints that makes us almost certain the game we are getting from SNK is none other than a new Samurai Shodown. check out our reason below and let us know if we agree with us.

Game Won Fans’ Poll in Japan

Back in 2016 and in interview with 4Gamer, SNK producer Yasuyuki Oda revealed that they did a poll in Japan asking people which next series they would want to revive. The Game that won the popularity vote was none other than a Samurai Shodown Sequel. Fatal Fury fans should not feel down though, as Garou 2 Followed closely as the second most requested title.

2018 is Samurai Shodown’s 25th anniversary

Image result for samurai shodown 25th anniversaryThis might not be a big hint, but it is worth mentioning that 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the Samurai Shodown franchise. The first game of the series, Samurai Spirits in Japan, was released in July 1993 on the Neo Geo Arcade system. Announcing a game around the 25th anniversary makes us believe a new Samurai Shodown is the mystery title.

Yasuyuki Oda Just Hinted at a New Samurai Shodown

Image result for yasuyuki odaJust last week, Gamegrin interviewed Oda san about SNK Heroines. When asked about what he likes to work on next, the KOF producer stated “Samurai Shodown” He then followed his answer with a laugh. If this was not enough of a hint, the interviewer went on and asked if there are aspects of other franchises that SNK would want to incorporate in a Samurai Shodown game. The answer, as given by the translator was: “There’s a lot of franchises out there, but there’s really nothing [Oda-san] can say, or really wants to say right now, about that kind of stuff. Good question but yeah. Just a little too early.

New Samurai shodown Anime, Comics, and MMO Announced

Image result for samurai shodown mmoBack in April, SNK chairman, Zhihui GE, announced that they are reviving the Samurai Shodown franchise with a mobile MMO, a new Anime series, as well as comics. Samurai shodown spawned two anime adaptations and several Mangas back in the 90’s. The first anime for the infamous Samurai Shodown the Motion picture which was a very loose adaptation of the first game. The second anime, released in late 90’s, was an official prequel to the Samurai Shodown 64 2 game, and featured Haohmaru, Nakoruru, Shiki, Rimiruru, Galford, Asura, and briefly, Genjuro.

And what better way to fully revive the series than with a brand new Fighting game title based on the property?
